Workshop Overview

Gulf Cooperation Council countries are experiencing rapid economic growth which has resulted in the need for immense infrastructure development and tremendous growth in demand for energy. Regional electricity consumption is growing at almost 8% annually; electricity generating capacity must double every decade to keep pace. Therefore, to insure electric energy security with high cost and limited sources of fossil fuels, in addition to reduce greenhouse gasses, renewable energy resources and their integration into the smart grid is becoming an attractive solution. Additionally, one of the grand challenges of implementing the Qatar National Vision (QNV) 2030 is constructing a sustainable infrastructure system in order to support economic growth that is consistent with international environmental standards. Therefore, attention should focus on construction of a smart-grid penetrated by renewable energy resources.

Looking at the importance of the smart grid and renewable energy resources integration in Qatar, this workshop will further explore the viability of this technology. Leading researchers and stakeholders from international research institutions, universities, and other private sector R&D programs will convene to exchange information on medium to long-term smart grid and renewable energies research agenda, progress, and future challenges.
